VMware Licensing Changes Have An Immediate Impact

VMware recently announced a very time sensitive and significant change to its CPU license metric. While they did not switch to a Core model, they did announce a 32-Core “threshold” and a “grace period” that ends April 30, 2020.

UMS can perform an efficient & cost-effective assessment that will identify the customers licensing needs, document eligibility for “free” licenses, and identify opportunities for new hardware purchases prior to the April 30, 2020 deadline.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Threshold: As of April 2, 2020, the current per-CPU license metric will be restricted to cover only 32 Cores

    • For example, a CPU with 48 Cores will require two (2) CPU licenses

    • Note: servers currently ship with CPUs that can handle up to 64 Cores

    • The Grace Period: Purchases made through April 30, 2020 get “free” licenses

    • Any customer who purchases VMware software licenses, for deployment on a physical server with more than 32-cores per CPU, prior to April 30, 2020 will be eligible for additional free per-CPU licenses to cover the CPUs on that server”

    • “The request for additional licenses must be submitted before 11:59pm PST U.S. on January 29, 2021. Proof of server purchase prior to April 30, 2020 will be required”

    • “Customers must be on active VMware support (SnS) contracts at the time of the request for additional licenses.”

Details can be found in an article published on March 16, 2020 in VMware’s website: https://www.vmware.com/company/news/updates/cpu-pricing-model-update-feb-2020.html
